INITIATIVES
Swifty Resource Mapping
This project is a statewide mapping of all types of resources that a family with
special health care needs may want to access. It includes therapy providers,
educational services, faith based services, recreation and leisure, employment
training and more. It is found at
www.swifamilies.com.
Annual Special Kids’ Family Fun Day
Beginning in November, 2003 our team has hosted a Special Kids’ Family Fun Day.
This has provided a day of fun for families with special health care needs at a
Mesa park. There are carnival games with prizes for everyone, inflatables where
the needs of each child are taken into consideration, food, and lots of fun. One
of the needs of our community that was identified was the dissemination of
information. So the Family Fun Day includes several agencies that set up tables
and talk to families about what they do and who they are.
Mesa’s Emergency Special Awareness card (MESA card)
Another area of concern for Mesa’s citizens was the communication with our first
responders in an emergency situation. For the past two years we have had
numerous conversations with our police and fire departments about what would be
the best way to communicate with them regarding children whose special health
care needs may impact an emergency situation. Through those discussions it was
decided to create a card for children that would contain important information,
be durable and compact, and could be identified in the CAD system.
This
community development initiative is supported by: Arizona Department of Health
Services and the Office of Children with Special Health Care Needs.
